We recently introduced a new feature that makes group creation easier and more fluid: the ability to create groups using private links. This update changes how users invite others to join groups, offering convenience and control.

In this post, we will explore how this new feature works, why it matters, and practical ways you can use it to improve your DMP experience.

How it works

The new feature allows users to generate a private link when creating a group. Instead of manually adding each member by using your address book, you can now share a private link with anyone you want to invite. When someone taps the link, they can join the group directly without needing additional approval or steps. Instant add.

Here’s a step-by-step overview:

  • Open the app, go to My Group Chats, hit new chat/group

  • Fill out Group name + select tags

  • Keep toggle ON for ‘group link’

  • Share this link via text

  • Recipients tap the link and get added

This process simplifies inviting multiple people at scale. Here are some visuals of the process.

Benefits of Using Private Links for Group Creation

This feature offers several advantages over contact-based group invitations:

  • Ease of Access

Sharing a link is faster than adding members one by one. It’s especially useful for large groups where you want to invite many people quickly.

  • Privacy Control

The link is private and unique to your group. Only those with the link can join, reducing the risk of unwanted participants.

  • Flexibility

You can post the link in a private forum, send it to a select few, or even use it for temporary groups.

  • No Need for Contacts

You don’t need to have everyone’s phone number in your address book. Multiple sharing within the group closes the gaps to joining. If you only have a person's email, no problem. Email them the link and they can tap and go from their phone. Do 3 friends have most of the contacts but you do not, no problem. Share the link with the 3 friends and they assist you in getting setup fast. Is your facebook group the only people you need to get into the group chat but you don't have their phone numbers? No problem, post the unique link to the Facebook group and everyone can join without having to request phone numbers and all the admin associated with that.

  • QR Signage

DMP creates a unique QR code for the group at the same time as the link. This means creating a sign to get people into a specific group is no longer difficult. Print your sign and include the QR code. That's all you need to do.

Practical Examples of Using Private Links

Organizing Level-Based Groups

Imagine you are creating a sign for putting all players at a Women's 3.5 level into a group. Pick your super social 3.5 women to be admins for the group and let them handle the introductions/onboarding process for your club.

Organizing Volunteer Groups for an Event

You are running a big event with a few hundred volunteers at different club locations around town. Create a group for each location and share the URL with the volunteers. They can add themselves to the groups (per club) as needed. If you're drumming up interest at the clubs prior to the event, put up a sign with a QR code for that group.

Large Hitting Groups

Imagine you're creating a group for 50+ people and you have a small sub-group of people (say 7) who know most of the people needing to join. Create the group for the 7 people and make them admins. Those admins can then share the private URL link, as needed, to get your group up and running fast. Removes a lot of overhead for getting up and running fast.

Privacy Considerations

Private group links improve convenience but require careful handling to maintain integrity :

  • Treat the link like an invitation to a private space. Avoid posting it publicly unless the group is meant to be open.

  • Admins should remove members as required. This is available under group admin.

What's Next

The addition of private link group creation aligns with the app’s goal to make communication simple and flexible. It reduces friction in starting conversations and expands possibilities for group use cases.

Users can now:

  • Quickly build groups around topics. Clinics, hitting, volunteers, meeting people, etc.

  • Invite people without needing their contact details.

  • Maintain control over group membership with a secure link.

This DMP update reflects a user-focused approach, responding to common challenges in group chat management.

Here is a list of coming features to enhance the current Private Link feature >

  • Block lists. Ability to push button block a person and record a rationale for the block.

  • Admitted Entry. User only gets approved entry AFTER an admin explicitly approves. It is not automatic entry. User has to provide information on why requesting entry.

  • Group Cap. We will be adding a maximum number for a group so admins can CAP the total.

  • Close Entry. Ability to tell users that you are taking no more users for the group.
